The views of Lake Bled are incredible. The ambassador and I took a boat ride to the island located in the middle of the lake. There are a few buildings on the island including the famous Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. The gothic-style architecture is one of my favorite things about Slovenia.
Fall at Vintgar Gorge
Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave
Best Unique Experience – I did a lot of hiking and cave exploring. In particular, I went on a private morning tour of the Postojna Cave which was amazing! It’s one of the longest caves in Europe and has been open since 1819. We were 300 ft below ground and walked the largest cave system in Slovenia.
Best Hike – Exploring Vintgar Gorge during the fall season is a must! We hiked along the Radovna River which is known for its aqua-colored water. Thousands of people hiked the Vintgar Gorge every year.
2nd Best Unique Experience – I went truffle hunting with an expert and her dog. After, we went home to have a homecooked meal with the truffles we hunted.
My Least Favorite Experience – One of the downfalls of the trip was that my luggage was lost for a day LOL. I’m glad I can laugh about it now.
Best Restaurant – Grič is a MICHELIN Star restaurant. The cuisine is excellent and the restaurant is located in a rural location up in the hills. It’s so charming! The chef prepares a daily tasting menu that incorporated regional and seasonal ingredients for a high-quality and delicious experience.
Me and Ambassador Harpootlian
On my last night in Slovenia, the Ambassador had an event at her residence for her Art in Embassies exhibit and it was great. I got to meet the Ambassadors from several countries and many of the Embassy staff. It was a dream to stay for 5 nights at the Ambassador’s house. I was able to get a glimpse of her daily duties. It was also interesting to learn about the protocols that are in place. The Ambassador is taking her role very seriously and it was great to see her representing our country. I felt very patriotic actually to know that my dear friend was serving our country abroad.
The featured image is a photo of the Predjama castle. It was built in the mouth of a cave. The original renaissance castle dates back to 1274. It has been rebuilt and restored by different families throughout the centuries. Now the castle is a museum. One of the many beautiful sights I saw during my trip. Exploring Slovenia felt like a fairytale. I can’t wait to go back.
